Well, the last few weeks we have been trying to finalize our new product for 2009 upon which we have. Which just means that now I have a ton of more stuff to do before December 1st comes along. Product photography has been completed and now layouts for the 2009 advertisements have gotten underway. I thought I’d just share some of the comps I’ve come up with to get some of your imput. I’m not super happy with the layout as it pretty much looks like the one I did a year and half ago. The owner gets stuck in past and sometimes its hard to fight a fight that ultimately, at this point, it is not worth fighting. The copy is not final yet so don’t worry about that.

New for this year is our product called the Triple Line. Mainly geared for players who prefer a firm grip, that akin to rubber cord grips.

The other new product being introduced is the 2009 Winn Giant! Yes it’s big, if you ask me, it too big. Since last year the market has been going crazy with oversized putter grips. We’ve taken it one step beyond.

Here is a Campaign push that we are trying to get through. Essentially it will be an ad that will change periodically with new people who use our Winn Grips. In this comp I’ve used a couple of players I’ve met in Sacramento who signed a release for us to use their image in our ads. In the middle slot I’ve used Sam Harris teeing of at Scholl Canyon. If this goes through I’m going to need Sam to fill out a release form to use his image in these nationwide advertisements. So far it looks like this is going to go through.

If this works I’ll be asking if you all out there who use Winn grips to send me a photo of you using the grips and I’ll try to incorporate them in an up coming ad.

INDIO, CALIFORNIA—Fantasy Springs Resort. Located about 125 miles due east of Downtown Los Angeles sits a resort in the middle of the 9th circle of hell, okay, maybe the 6th circle of hell, you know, with the flaming tombs. With temperatures in the 100+ range and humidity about as bad as a Roman bathhouse Sam and I arrived to this “oasis” in the desert on Friday evening just in time to check-in and venture downstairs to the casino.

Somewhere in the back of my head I was expecting to see the scene in the movie Vegas Vacation when Clark and Cousin Eddie go to the Indian casino and play “Penny, Penny, Who’s Got the Penny.” It was close but not too bad. I say close because we decided to play craps. I’m still not sure what that was about. In California you cannot use dice in the casinos so you play craps with cards and you call out numbers. I’m sure you can look it up on Wikipedia but, seriously, it was a joke.

The morning came early and so did the heat. Looking out the hotel room I noticed that a thunderstorm had passed through during the night. Now if I liked humidity I say this was a godsend. I don’t like humidity. 6:30am as we headed towards the tournament check-in I was already sweaty and hot. You could feel the water evaporating off of the grass and pavement. Sam and I hit the driving range to try to get 6 months of practice worth in about 30 minutes. Soon enough we were warmed and ready to go.

It was a shotgun start so at 7:30am all 94 participants were loaded up in their carts and began their way to their individual holes they would be start on. We were paired up with another twosome, George and Ron. They were friends of a friend of Jeff Shepherd, one of the guys I work with. Our hole was Number 16, a longish par 3 over water. Not the best to start off with. Being true to form I knocked my ball directly in to the water. This was going to be a long day. I was able to par a couple of the holes at which point I was ready to call it a day stop while I was ahead but with 9 more holes and the temperature ever increasing we had to continue our torture. We ended the day with a score that was hovering around the same temperature we played in. I was exhausted, thirsty, and hungry. Had a pizza and a Gatorade, and took a nap.

6pm we headed down to the tournament dinner. Now in my experience drinking, I’ve observed that there are 5 different types of drunks with variations in-between. I’ve named them accordingly:

The Quiet Drunk:
The Leprechaun Drunk: a happy drunk.
The Annoying Drunk:
The Mentally Challenged Drunk: has reverted back to a point where you feel sorry for him because he really does look like this retarded.
The Mean/Angry Drunk:

This evening I was able to see all these and trust me, it wasn’t a pretty sight. We had one guy on the microphone who was completely absent and mean as hell. Another running around tripping on chairs and knocking over tables and smiling the whole time. Retards, there were a few. And pretty much the guy at the microphone quickly enveloped 3 of the 5 types of drunks. This was the same guy I’ve heard stories about last year that stuck his hands into a fire on a $5 bet. Idiot. There were some pretty crazy stories that happened that evening but luckily Sam and I had already left to try our luck at the penny slots. You laugh but the funny thing is I think I won $80 on the penny slots.

The next day at the tournament did not seem as bad. It was hot but the humidity was down. I felt I played a little better this but the funny thing was that I scored one stroke worse. It’s all good.

No matter how hot it was, over all, we had a good time. I guess I’d be happy playing golf in lava and still have a good time, well, maybe not, I think my legs would melt and I’d end up a stump like Darth Vader. Does Darth Vader play golf?

The original concept was going to be a female version of our current running in ad in Golf-Digest, Golfworld, Golfweek, Golf Magazine, Golf Tips and PGA Magazine. Below is the original rough concept. You’ll notice the light temperature is uncorrected but this was used as a comp.

Studio Shot with Model.

Marketing decided to go in a different direction for the US market. We used Natalie Gulbis as the model to promote our grips. I fixed the background placed in a new grip and moved her over to the right side as to make sure she was off centered and more pleasing to the eye considering balance with copy and logos.

Below is a transformation from the beginning to the the end of the project to the ad that came out today.

Final Print

Went golfing today at the Los Alamito Navy golf course. Had a nice time. I went with Martin and Scott Fischer. There are two courses there the Cruiser Course and the Destroyer Course. The Cruiser Course is a 9 hole executive course with a couple of par 4′s, the Destroyer Course is an 18 hole full length course. We played that one. One really cool thing about this course is that each hole is named after a ship or boat. My favorite one was called ‘the minesweeper’ it’s a par 5 that runs the length of the runway there. As we were playing on that hole an F-18 took off. It was pretty sweet. $25 + $11 for cart after 2pm on weekends. Not bad since the course is significantly much more before 2pm. The course was well spaced out and we never really felt like we were being pushed. Low stress. It was great. Didn’t really keep great score since it was kind of hard to concentrate when Scott kept yapping on everyone’s back swing or during putts. No big deal. It was good to get out on the course.

It will be talking about our new product and company in general. I just screened it yesterday. There will be some minor editing changes but for the most part runs pretty well. John Daly is pretty funny, and Natalie and Butch show some lesson time. They filmed the majority of this at the PGA show in Orlando in January and they used some filler that they shot when we shot the commercials for 2007, in October of last year. It’s entertaining if anything.

Well woke up early today to go play golf at the Van Nuys Golf Course. Jonn and I played the 9 hole course with our tee time at 730am. That only meant that I needed to get up by 5am to leave the house at 530am to arrive in Glendale at around 630am, pick up Jonn and get to the course by 7am, warm up and on the 1st tee at 730am. It all worked out and we got there before the course even opened.

I was able to par the first 2 holes, birdie the 3rd, then it was down hill from there. Even with decent drives off of the tee I was able to 3-putt and doubled the 4th and 5th holes. Shot 1 over on the 6th and bogied 7th and 8th. To stop the bleeding I was able to par the 9th and walk away with a 6 over par.

Final Scores: Jonn 43, Adrian 36.

Not bad for not playing for about 5 months. We will have to get out there again soon. It was a good-time.
