Amboy Shoe Tree

What the hell is this???

This shoe tree is located about 1/4 mile east of the famous (or infamous) Roy’s Diner in Amboy, California on a long forgotten stretch of Route 66.  Before the completion of the Interstate 40, this was main route for the Needles/Kingman area from Southern California.  There are many eclectic and interesting sites to see on Route 66 out here in the desert.  I would suggest the someday you travel the California desert via Route 66 to appreciate its beauty. Use caution in the summer months, the high temperatures usually average somewhere between 110° and 120° degrees.

We just passed the shoe tree today, 6-7-10. The shoe tree fell down in February of this year. The stump and branches are still there and so are the shoes. There are even two smaller trees down the road, maybe a “bra tree”? I couldn’t leave shoes, so I left a silly band as a mark of the young at heart. The Bollingers left a purple duck band. The legend lives on.

  2. Sandy, thanks for posting! Bummer about the tree falling down. Were you able to take any pictures? I’d love to place an updated link to what it looks like now.

I do remember the “Bra Tree” and I think there was a “Panty Tree”. It was one of those moments traveling down Route 66 at 75-80 MPH when I saw something passed on the side of the road and I thought to myself, “Was that what I thought it was???” LOL. Thanks for sharing!
